Your Trotter and Deane experience is more than just about our garments, we like to create an atmosphere which compliments our clothes.

A few weeks into the shop opening we were introduced to Samuel Harris, a Cambridge based artist. His intricate abstract paintings impressed us so much that we commissioned him to produce a one off painting of our new shop. In return we would make him a one off made-to-measure suit.

After a few weeks of non-stop painting and a few hours debating over fabric, lining and buttons. We are both very happy with the outcome of our creative collaboration.

The painting now sits downstairs in our suit room, complimenting it’s surroundings very well.

Thank you Sam!

The July Festival at Newmarket, including Ladies Day, Gentleman’s Day and the July Cup on 13th/14th/15th of the month is billed by organisers as the ‘Ticket of the Summer’! Racegoers make it a special occasion by dressing accordingly. With Ladies day already having a reputation for colour and edgy fashion why let the girls have all the fun.

While dress codes are more relaxed than Royal Ascot, visitors to the Premier Enclosure at Newmarket are encouraged to imagine they are attending a smart wedding. But wherever you are on the course, the Festival weekend is an opportunity to ‘dress to impress’.

Our ice blue suit with a double breasted waistcoat is perfect for the Premier Enclosure, add our ‘rain or shine’ hand burnished cognac brogue to complete your look.

Our matching Silk/Wool box check jacket and waistcoat will make you stand out with pride in the winners enclosure. Dress with our cobalt blue Italian chino and a paisley print shirt.

In the Champagne tent one of our summer weight Egyptian cotton shirts adds a statment factor to your outfit. Teamed with some complimentary accesories and your set for the big day ahead!

Summer in the City

June 21st 2017

With the temperature rising, the beautiful city of Cambridge is awash with floral shorts, vibrant 50s inspired dresses and sun kissed legs – the ladies resplendent in their summer finery. But what about us men? Are we destined to spend another summer feeling hot and bothered in clothes more suited to October? No my friends, because with a few neat tricks you can have summer dressing sorted without compromising your innate sense of style or comfort and with a lot less effort than you think.

Let’s tackle the dreaded what to wear to work conundrum. You don’t want to turn up in the morning sweating profusely in your winter suit but a linen option is a big no no if you’re commuting – you’ll look like a discarded sandwich bag. A light weight wool suit, made from Italian fabric as breathable as linen without the crease, is your summer saviour. You never see the men of Paris, Rome or Madrid looking dishevelled as they make their way to work in 30 degrees and that’s because just as they eat seasonal produce, they wear seasonal clothing. If the thought of wearing a tie at this time of year is enough to bring you out in a sweat, perhaps opt instead for a shirt with a striking contrast trim that keeps the look clean and fresh without the restriction. To inject some colour, have a selection of silk blend pocket squares to hand. Add a pair of good quality shoes and timeless leather bag and you’ve nailed it.

Slim cut Italian trousers with a bit of stretch in the cotton have the flexibility and comfort for your evenings and weekends. When teamed with a floral Egyptian cotton shirt, inject vibrancy for summer without looking overdone. A selection of tailored clothes with individual detail makes for effortless summer style without compromising comfort. Relaxing with friends, a drink by the river or a day sightseeing – you’ve got it covered.

Men in the UK tend to avoid shorts when they want to look smart but that’s a mistake – a pair of Italian shorts teamed with a contrast trim polo shirt and you’re ready to tackle even the hottest of days with panache. If you need a jacket, stick to a wool/silk mix to ensure you stay cool and crumple free. Keep footwear light and you’re all set for a stylish summer of fun!

Cambridge: The Story So Far

April 27th 2017

We are excited to offer you a ‘behind the scenes’ view from our new shop, opening in Cambridge in May. Situated on the precinct of Sussex Street, we look forward to welcoming you mid-May. Much consideration has gone into the design of the space and what we hope will be a pleasurable customer experience.

Pevsner described Sussex Street – the location of our new store – as “best piece of pre-war urban planning at Cambridge.” The neo-Georgian architecture echos that of our premises in Bury St Edmunds. The colonnaded precinct is an elegant location and a fitting home for T&D.

Robert and Jane oversee the finalisation of plans as work commences. The objective is to create a space that is welcoming and comfortable, and showcases our collection to its best advantage.

The main shop floor: bespoke furniture fine tunes the space and enhances its architectural proportions.

As work progresses, the character of the new space becomes clear.

Rob, our shop painter, no doubt fully fuelled with tea and in the throes of his work.

The subterranean suit room: The finish is crisp and elegant. We look forward to showing you the end result and indeed welcoming you to our new store. Subscribe to our mailing list for further insights, stories and glimpses of this season’s collection.

Smart Needn’t Mean Formal…

March 31st 2017

… and a ‘smart-casual’ look needn’t be cliche.

Josh wears a quarter-zip with an embossed diamond front panel. The light green chinos are in our slim fit and the introduction of a cotton tie adds a smart yet informal dynamic to the look. His Italian-made pumps would also work ideally with a contemporary suit.

This look is now in store.

Our New Suit Room

February 9th 2017

The new year is an opportunity for growth and renewal. This January we have re-imagined our suit room, thinking about how the space might be better used to welcome our customers and showcase the Trotter and Deane experience. This is the short story of the new space.

Out With the Old: We set to work dramatically re-configuring the floor-plan of the upstairs space. Our building is listed and careful consideration was given to how best showcase the period features of this space. After plenty of early starts and after gallons of tea, we knew we had created the space we wanted.

This was truly a collaborative experience. Our in-house tailors created curtains for the new fitting rooms using fine Fox Brothers flannel, a nod to the high quality materials we use in our garments.

With curtains in situ.

Finely crafted commissioned furniture completes the space, showcasing the design elements of our made to measure experience. New furnishings provide plushness and comfort.

We have created a space where we’ll be able to collaborate with our clients for years to come, where those who visit can look and feel their very best.
